  • identify key strategies that strengthen the retention and application of knowledge and which supports students of varying ability levels, to maximise their potential in exams
  • develop your planning for a holistic design and technology curriculum across key stage 3, 4 and 5 that supports student success in the design and technology written exams at GCSE and A level
  • develop skills for specific types of questions at GCSE and A level, including extended answer questions


With the increased rigour in design and technology examinations, at both GCSE and A level, it’s important to equip students with effective learning strategies.

This course will provide ideas and resources to support teachers to develop a curriculum that embeds examination strategies throughout learning, drawing from expertise and research, including that from the Education Endowment Foundation.

The course content is relevant to teachers who are delivering key stage 3, GCSE and A level design and technology curriculums.

During the course we will:

  • unpick the current research on what supports effective learning, including research on metacognition by the Education Endowment Foundation
  • work with you to develop a holistic curriculum with natural progression across key stage 3, 4 and 5
  • identifying strategies that embed learning and revision of exam content over time
  • consider easy to implement strategies that support students of varying ability levels, supporting students to maximise their potential in exams
  • developing skills for specific types of exam questions, including extended answer questions at both GCSE and A level
  • identifying key priority learning areas in both GCSE and A level exams
  • undertake practical activities to support the teaching of science linked parts of the curriculum, eg levers and mechanisms, forces and stresses
  • explore ways in which theoretical content can be delivered with a hands on approach
  • discuss how you can work with your maths department to develop resources that support the maths content within design and technology (Note the course will not cover maths content in detail but will consider how maths can be easily integrated into the D&T curriculum)

What are the course objectives?

  • To create students who are more engaged & who take responsibility for their learning.
  • To recommend key priorities for knowledge & understanding.
  • To develop strategies that embed learning, along with developing higher order thinking strategies that help students maximise their grades.
Revision 3

What is the course about?

  • Includes content relevant to all exam boards with a focus mostly only GCSE but with content that is also relevant to A level.
  • Focus on teaching and learning strategies that can be used every day to develop a curriculum that embeds learning.
  • Developing a curriculum that develops good learning habits from KS3 onwards, but without a ‘teaching to the test’ approach.
  • Strategies that support every day delivery of theory and which are also relevant to developing skills for the NEA.
  • Ideas on targeted revision in the build up to the exam.
  • Flagging up key priorities in theory content that will help students be successful in the exam.
  • Understanding more about metacognition and using evidence based strategies to support learning, such as spaced and deliberate practice.
  • Ideas for practical activities that teach theory in a hands on way, particularly for the core content of the exam paper.
  • Strategies for approaching both low and high mark questions at GCSE and how students can develop ways of thinking to help them structure their answers.
  • Strategies for maximising the performance of borderline students, as well as high flyers, without adding to teacher workload.
  • The day will encourage you to think differently & to challenge & reflect on how you currently do things. You will do a range of activities that will help you find solutions that will work in your classroom immediately, along with resources that support longer term planning.

Who’s the course for? 

  • Any D&T teacher from any material specialism & using any exam board
  • Departments thinking about curriculum planning generally especially those who want effective strategies for embedding learning
  • Departments wanting effective revision strategies that make revision more manageable and which avoid ‘cramming' 

What resources do I get on the course?

The day includes resources worth more than £100. Examples of some of the resources included with the day are:

  • An extensive resource pack to support the day itself, much of which can be used immediately back in the classroom. The resource pack also supports curriculum planning over a longer period. 
  • A Mixed Materials Samples Pack which includes samples of metals, woods, textiles  and polymers, along with supporting classroom resources.

  • Curriculum mapping resource that supports a department to map their curriculum to create a KS3 and KS4 that naturally flows and supports student progression. Links will also be made to the KS2 and KS5 curriculum to enable the development of a holistic curriculum. 
  • A copy of The GCSE Mindset book by Steve Oaks & Martin Griffin. This books supports our approach to teaching and learning and to supporting students with developing a positive approach to learning. 
  • Note that resources may be changed at any time without notification due to availability but any resource will be replaced with an alternative resource. 

What does this course not include?

These points might help you identify if this is the best course to meet your needs:

  • Content doesn’t focus on one board, nor will it cover any particular theory areas in depth. Delegates looking for detailed & specific advice relevant to a particular board or to individual areas of theory are advised to attend a course run by their chosen board. 
  • As the course targets all exam boards it doesn’t include a traditional scheme of learning, although scheme of learning planning guidance will be given. 
  • Exam questions will be considered but the course will not include extensive use of these, nor will delegates take part in extensive marking practice exercises. Instead the focus is on longer term teaching & learning strategies that better develop exam technique. 
  • The focus is on the written exam so there will be very limited reference to the NEA (although links between the exam & NEA will be made).
