What are the course objectives?

  • To identify how textiles fits into the D&T GCSE qualification in a way that retains its creativity and uniqueness whilst still embracing the broader materials approach. 
  • To develop knowledge of selected areas of the core content for D&T GCSE, particularly those that may be less familiar to textiles specialists.
  • To develop a textiles curriculum from KS3 - 5 that embraces a broader materials approach and which engages both students interested in a traditional textiles approach as well as those who are more adventurous. 


What is the course about?

  • Are you worried about how textiles fits into D&T GCSE? Not sure how to plan your curriculum? Do you want to include the traditional creativity and uniqueness of textiles whilst still embracing new ideas? Worried about the content that feels less familiar to textiles specialists? Not sure how to support your colleagues with the core content all students have to cover in textiles? All of these are the types of questions that will be answered on this course. 
  • Develop a strong KS3 that provides a firm basis for the core content at GCSE.
  • Develop a 21st Century curriculum that is both creative and technical.
  • The course includes some hands on activities that are creative and which help bring the core content to life helping to make it relevant to textiles.
  • Reinvigorate your teaching & create a buzz about textiles in the D&T GCSE.
  • Challenge perceptions and stereotypes about what textiles is.
  • Up to date information on the textiles industry and on careers in textiles.
  • Reviewing your curriculum to identify small changes that can be made immediately as well as longer term plans for developing the curriculum.
  • Using the changes in the D&T GCSE to strengthen the position of textiles and to raise its profile. 
  • Where to get help on areas you are worried about.
  • Some of the content will be also be relevant to the GCSE qualification in general and many resources will be of use to your whole department. 
  • L sewing machine IMG 4508A range of learning content will be covered during the day but in particular this course will focus on areas of the core content that textiles teachers have said they feel less confident in delivering e.g. non textiles materials, levers & mechanisms and electronics. Delegates will take part in activities that will help them learn the content themselves and which are suitable for using back in the classroom. The time available means we’ll focus more on metals than other materials, with practical activities showing how they might be used in a textiles context, but delegates will take away resources that cover all other materials. Activities delegates carry out will be very ’textilesy’ with lots of opportunities for creativity.

  • The day will encourage you to think differently & to challenge & reflect on how you currently do things. You will do a range of activities that will help you find solutions that will work in your classroom immediately, along with resources that support longer term planning. 


Who’s the course for?

  • This course is particularly suitable for textiles teachers who want to embrace the new curriculum but who lack confidence in some of the areas in the GCSE spec. 
  • Relevant to all exam boards. 
  • The course might also be suitable for non specialists wanting to know more about how textiles can be used to deliver D&T GCSE.

What resources do I get on the course?

The day includes a range of resources to support the day worth at least £50. Examples of some of the resources included with the day are:

  • A pack of 18 materials and 4 yarns/threads linked to metals that are used in textiles, along with ideas on how they might be used in the classroom. Find out more about this resource.

  • Materials to carry out a range of creative activities focusing on metals used in textiles, levers & mechanisms & electronics. 
  • An electronic set of resources to support the materials, levers & mechanisms & electronics content covered during the day, much of which can be used immediately back in the classroom. The resource pack also supports curriculum planning over a longer period. Although the focus of the materials work done on the day is on the use of metals in textiles, the electronic resources includes information on other D&T materials.

  • Curriculum mapping resource that supports a department to map their curriculum to create a KS3 and KS4 that naturally flows and supports student progression. 
  • Note that resources may be changed at any time without notification due to availability but any resource will be replaced with an alternative. 


What does this course not include?

These points might help you identify if this is the best course to meet your needs:

  • Some key aspects will be covered with the aim of up skilling delegates and resources will be provided that will support delegates when delivering content they aren’t familiar with. There won’t however be time to cover every aspect of the core content in order to fully up skill delegates. The aim instead is to show how it's possible for textiles to remain strong at GCSE level, embracing elements of both traditional textiles as well as newer ideas. 
  • Some reference will be made to the NEA but the main focus will be on the core content related to the exam. 
  • There will be lots of references and resources linked to textiles, including many that are relevant to the core content for textiles. Non specialists attending the course should however note that the day doesn’t aim to teach detailed textiles knowledge and skills and is more aimed at how content traditionally perceived as less relevant to textiles can be delivered via a textiles focus.
