About the 'Mainly Metal' Distance Learning Course (option 1 full course)

CPD for teachers and technicians that lets you learn at your own rate and at a time and place that suits you. The course Includes a wide range of electronic resources, as well as the option that includes a range of material samples that can be used for classroom displays and handling activities, and a selection of loose materials to enable you to get started on some of the practical activities immediately.

The course is equivalent to at least 8 hours of CPD. The exact number of hours will depend on the prior experience and knowledge of the participant and how many activities are carried out.

The course is particularly designed for textiles specialists who feel less familiar and confident with learning on metals in the core content of the D&T GCSE and who are looking for ideas and activities that engage learners who have a particular interest in textiles. The course is designed to show how learning on metals is relevant to textiles and has ideas and resources for creative hands on activities. 

This resource works best when viewed on a computer.

What are the objectives of the course?

The outcomes for this course are targeted at the KS3 D&T curriculum for England, as well as the core content of the D&T GCSE (England), but much of the content, particularly the practical activities, are likely to be relevant to other qualifications and contexts. The distance learning course is designed as a CPD activity for teachers and technicians but content is easily transferable to the classroom. The course aims to:

• Provide a CPD experience equivalent to at least 8 hours of training.
• Review how learning on metals is relevant to students with an interest in textiles.
• Investigate how metals are used in a textiles context by designers and manufacturers in the real world.
• Identify key learning on metals that might be introduced at KS3 and as part of the core content for the D&T GCSE (England).
• Consider ideas on how learning on metals might be delivered in an engaging and creative way that engages students with a particular interest in textiles.
• Experiment with a range of different metal materials, including traditional hard metal materials, as well as textiles based metal materials.
• Reflect on how learning on metals might be tested in the D&T GCSE exam and consider how this can be embedded into practical activities.
• Provide resources suitable for immediate use in the classroom (most are editable).
• Outline a wide range of creative experimental activities suitable for use in the classroom, along with instructions for three project outcomes and ideas on how they might be integrated into a scheme of learning. 

What electronic resources are included in the course?

Electronic resources included with the course include:

• Most resources are presented as PowerPoints or Word documents and are editable so they can be personalised to the needs of individual teachers. PowerPoint resources have been formatted as an A4 page to make it easier to print slides as handouts.
• A summary of key learning on metals in the KS3 Curriculum & D&T GCSE Core Content (across all specifications for England), including editable information sheets.

• A wide range of handouts (most of which are editable) with activities that are suitable for classwork and homework. In particular, these sheets are designed to embed learning and be used as part of a spaced and retrieval practice approach.

• Electronic resources to support the material samples.
• Information on metals used in a textiles context, including references and research activities on designers and manufacturers who use metal in a textiles context in the real world. 

• Wide range of experimental practical activities suitable for the classroom that help students understand the relevance of learning on metals. This makes up a significant part of the resource. The material samples that accompany the electronic resources enable the participant to start experimenting with their ideas straight away (allow time for delivery of samples by post). If the option without the materials is purchased suggestions on where to source your own materials are included in the resource. 

• Instructions for three practical activity outcomes, including information on links to learning (materials are not provided for these).

What material samples are included in the resource pack?

The course includes an option that includes a range of samples (sent to the address given at the time the purchase is made and are usually dispatched within 3 days). The materials pack can also be purchased separately (see option 2). 

• Metals ‘ mini materials pack’ - 10 small samples of metal materials (cast iron, galvanised mild steel, stainless steel, high carbon steel, high speed steel, aluminium, copper, pewter, brass, zinc plated steel). Sample sizes vary but most are a maximum of 2cm. These samples match the metals covered in the electronic resources. 10 loose manilla tags are also included to give the option to display the samples  in a format that matches the textiles samples.
• 14 samples of metals used in textiles displayed on manilla tags. These samples match materials referred to in the electronic resources. Approximate size of material pieces are 3.5cm x 7cm and yarns approximately 30cm (tags 4.5cm x 9.5cm). 
• Various loose metal material samples to enable you to start experimenting straight away. These are bagged up to match a selection of the activities mentioned in the resource. Materials include (sizes are approximate): 12 pieces of flat metal strips 8.5cmx0.5cm, 4 metres coated copper fine gauge wire, Angelina metal fibres, 22x30cm Mylar, 11x16cm metal paper, 11x16cm metallised card, 11x16cm metal coated bubble wrap, 7x12cm anodised aluminium, 4.5x8cm copper, 4.5x8cm pewter, 6x6cm aluminium mesh
• Colours and types of materials may be different to those shown in the images.
• If the electronic resources only are purchased, note the material samples are referenced throughout the resources with suggestions included in the resources on where the materials might be sourced so you can create your own material packs.

Who is this distance learning course aimed at?

• Anyone who wants to study at their own pace and at a time that suits them with no time away from the classroom, no travel expenses and no cover needed. 
• The distance learning module is designed as a CPD activity for teachers and technicians. Anyone can study the course but it's particularly designed for textiles specialists who feel less familiar and confident with learning on metals and who are looking for ideas and activities to engage learners with a particular interest in textiles. 
• Learning in the module focuses on knowledge of metals at KS3 and in the D&T GCSE (England) but it is likely to be relevant to other qualifications and applications. It doesn’t focus on any individual awarding body.
• No specialist equipment for working with metals is needed to carry out the activities, although access to standard textiles equipment is advised e.g. sewing machine. Some knowledge of textiles is recommended for some activities. 
• This course is based on some of the content of the 'D&T GCSE: Making It Work In Textiles’ course, as well as the ’Supporting Textiles Specialists to Deliver D&T GCSE Core Content’ course. Anyone who has attended these courses can purchase this resource at half price - contact us with your name, school, and date you attended.
