D&T on the t.v., getting to know your tutor group, curriculum updates, & lots of free resources

I hope everyone has had a good start to the new term. I’ve been busy this week creating a free resource on careers in textiles which will hopefully be released some time next week. Did you know there’s a predicted growth of 15,000 - 20,000 textiles jobs by 2020 particularly in areas related to textiles technology? Did you know that Russell Group universities offer fashion and textiles courses? Did you know some fashion courses now ask for science or science related qualifications because of the high tech developments in the industry? All of this will be covered in the free resource  and details of how to download it will be posted on my Facebook page and in the blog.

Calendar    Things coming up soon include:

Curriculum Updates

The New GCSE & A Level D&T Qualifications

Many of you will have seen over the holiday that none of the GCSE or A level specifications were passed by Ofqual. This was pretty much expected as something like 95% of all qualifications in all subjects fail the initial submission.

OCR have already submitted their specification and have uploaded the revised edition on their website.  Note this is the second draft and still has to be reviewed by Ofqual. Edexcel is due to resubmit today, Eduqas say theirs will be resubmitted on 29th September but AQA won’t be resubmitting until 28th October. I don’t know how much we can read into the resubmission dates but it does tell us that we won’t get any final details for all exam boards until later in the year (and that assumes they are successful second time around).

Resubmission dates for the A level are 8th September for Edexcel, 6th October for Eduqas, 14th October for OCR and 4th November for AQA.

If you want to stay up to date with the resubmissions this is the weblink to look at.

If you are looking for courses on the new GCSE take a look at the one we are running on behalf of Keynote Educational on 9th November, and the 2 day one at The National STEM Learning Centre on 9th & 10th December (which has a bursary that pays the fees if you are a state school or academy). If you want to find out more about textiles in the new GCSE look at the courses in London and Liverpool.

In The News

D&T on the TV

L Fail again 9193

There have been quite a few D&T related programmes recently and this week this included a visit inside the Dyson factory featured on the Hidden Britain by Drone (episode 2) and footwear design and manufacture featured on Inside the Factory (BBC 2).

L trainer 3683 edited-2

The programme on footwear design was particularly interesting with lots of useful learning points relating to textiles as well as to D&T generally. The episode can be purchased from the BBC store for £1.89 (thanks to Jill Lesbirel for letting me know as I wasn’t aware of this) and it would be a useful classroom resource. It is available until the end of the month on iPlayer for free and it would be a great flipped learning homework. Learning includes the manufacturing processes used when making a trainer, machinery used when making footwear, scales of production, designing a shoe, degree courses at Cordwainers, materials used for shoemaking, history of shoemaking, hand made ballet shoes compared to mass production. It is very boy friendly and helps combat some of the stereotypes about what textiles is.

There is also a programme on Thursday 8th September (as well as Thursday 15th) on BBC2 at 9pm called Absolutely Fashion: Inside British Vogue which might also be useful as a homework especially for A level textiles students.

The final one isn’t a mainstream t.v. programme but if you can’t get to the D&T Futures: Wayne Hemingway Design Lecture at Royal College of Arts in London on 13th September you can watch it live via tv.data.org.uk (6pm - 7.30pm)
