Crowdsource wall display

The Crowdsourced wall display at the Design Museum collects together objects suggested by the public as things they feel represents every day design. This would make a great department display particularly as it showcases a range of products across all material areas. As well as promoting D&T, it would have a big impact on open evenings, whilst being a teaching resource and discussion prompt during the day. The products could be things that changed over time, perhaps with different themes, and the wall could even be part of an interactive homework. The display could be made smaller, and could even be replicated just using images. The strong visual impact of the wall is achieved by careful spacing and the black and white grid effect created by the metal grid the products are attached to. Some products also have quotes from members of the public explaining their choice.

The Design Museum also use the terms ‘user’, ‘designer’ and ‘maker’ to good effect, both in the main entrance and as part of the permanent display. As well as providing visual impact their repeated use across the museum helps reinforce the key message of the museum.

The display in the main entrance is interactive which may not be possible to easily replicate in a school situation although stationary displays would still have a significant impact.
