What’s included in the pack?

This pack consists of 31 samples including woods, metals, polymers and textiles. Each sample has a removable sticky label with a number to identify each material.

The materials in the pack are:

L L P3020504 edited-1

Wood - Oak, birch, teak, ash, beech, mahogany, pine, cedar, maple, spruce, larch, MDF, plywood (only the MDF & plywood samples have holes predrilled but all other materials could be drilled to add holes)

LL P3020506 edited-1

Metal - galvanised mild steel, cast iron, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass, zinc plated steel (note the cast iron sample has a sharp point)

L P3020507

Thermoforming polymers - polypropylene, High Density Polyethylene, ABS, Acrylic, PVC, PET (note the shape of the PET sample will vary & may not be the same as in the photo)

L P3020514

Textiles - Weft knit cotton interlock, twill weave cotton denim, non woven acrylic felt, plain weave cotton scrim, non woven mixed fibre fleece (presented on manila tags)

Note most samples are small and are a similar size to a large button or toggle. The textiles samples are approximately 4cm x 5.5cm and are mounted onto manila tags. The colour of the materials may vary from those shown in the photo.

The pack comes with supporting handouts and these documents are stored on a memory stick included with the resource. The supporting resources are:

Untitled 4
  • PDF documents that the materials can be stuck onto for display purposes. Several different formats of the display documents are provided so teachers can choose the format they prefer e.g. line drawing or coloured sheets, with name labels or without. The documents have the display theme of tags to fit in with the tags that the textiles samples are mounted onto.
  • 4 #ThinkDo activity cards, one for each material area (in jpeg format). These can be printed out as they are to create an instant activity sheet, used in a PowerPoint or other handout, or used for display.
  • 4 A4 worksheet handouts (in PDF format) that get students to consider the types of products the materials in the sample pack might be used for (one worksheet for each material area).
  • 38 slide PowerPoint with one slide per material (2 for the mixed fibre fleece and cotton scrim). Each slide Untitled 5includes a very brief summary of the properties and uses of each material, plus an image. Suggested activities on how the cards and material samples might be used together are also included in the PowerPoint.

Good to Know

  • The samples are packaged in separate bags and held together in a larger bag, along with an information sheet.
  • Most wood, metal and polymer samples are small, with many being a similar size to a large button or toggle. The textiles samples are approximately 4cm x 5.5cm and are mounted onto manila tags.
  • The materials can be used by any D&T teacher to show examples of different D&T materials. The pack was originally designed as part of a KS3 or KS4 learning module on components used in textiles products and garments but the resources are not textiles specific and cover wood, metals, polymers and textiles.
  • The woven cotton scrim and mixed fibre non woven fabrics are backed with a polyethylene coating. This finish adds a waterproof coating. These are included as an example of how polymers and textiles might be combined to enhance the properties of the original materials.
  • Note, some of the material samples and electronic resources in this pack are given away as part of some of the courses we run e.g. The Textiles Teacher Roadshows that took place from October 2017 to July 2018. If you’ve attended any of our courses please check you don’t have the samples already before making the purchase.

Note colours & shapes of some materials may vary depending on availability

Curriculum Links

  • The materials in the pack have been chosen because of their links to the core content for the D&T GCSE specifications, as well as their links to KS3. Not all materials for all exam boards have been included, and some materials in the pack are not listed in all specifications (but they can still be used as examples in exam paper responses).

Use our free mapping document to identify the specific material knowledge required for each exam board specification and to identity which samples are most relevant to your chosen exam board.

  • The materials can be used by any D&T teacher to show examples of different D&T materials.  The pack was originally designed as part of a KS3 or KS4 learning module on components used in textiles products and garments but the resources are not textiles specific and cover wood, metals, polymers and textiles.
  • The samples have been sourced for their suitability to create a compact display and sheets are included that can be printed out to display the samples on. The samples are also suitable for use as part of a materials analysis activity.
  • The samples aren’t just off cuts of materials but have been sourced so they might be used to inspire students when designing and making e.g. how they might be used as a component on a product. Some materials are a ready made component already e.g. wing nut, cord lock.
  • Some of the wood, metal and polymer materials can be purchased separately as class sets and their small size makes them suitable to give to students as samples. Class sets might also be suitable for students to experiment with e.g. adding different surface finishes, creating buttons and toggles for garments.
  • The accompanying handouts support activities based on the core content for the D&T GCSE in relation to wood, metals, polymers and textiles.

Want to buy class sets of individual materials?

Some of the wood, metal and polymer materials can be purchased separately as class sets. Contact julie@julieboyd.co.uk for information on costs (minimum order applies).

Additional resources that can be purchased to support the pack

Additional electronic resources are available to purchase separately that include resources to support the use of the woods, metals and polymers as components in textiles products and garments. These additional resources might be particularly useful for textiles teachers to support the teaching of some of the core content on materials for the D&T GCSE in an engaging way relevant to textiles. Some of the materials in this additional pack are resources given away as part of The Textiles Teacher Roadshow that took place between October 2017 to July 2018. Click here for more information.
