14th November 2018, 10.00am - 4.00pm
St Mary Redcliffe & Temple School, Bristol, BS1 6RT
£295 (includes VAT)
This is one of our VIP Bespoke courses. Find out more here.

This course is run by Julie & Paul Boyd (this is one of our independent courses)

What are the course objectives?

  • To create students who are engaged & who take more responsibility for their learning.
  • To recommend key priorities for knowledge & understanding.
  • To develop strategies that embed learning, along with developing higher order thinking strategies that help students maximise their grades.

What is this course about?

  • A basic comparison of the A level Fashion & Textiles qualifications on offer, along with tips on how to structure a 2 year course.
  • General curriculum planning tips to create a coherent KS3, 4 & 5 learning journey which helps students transition to A level.
  • This course considers the specifications from all exam boards from the perspective of teaching & learning with tips & ideas on making learning in more interesting & active in order to engage students.
  • Strategies for getting students to work more independently & to ‘think like an A level student’, along with techniques that help students transition from GCSE to A level.
  • Strategies for exam success, along with methods for embedding these across the 2 year course. In particular, the course will focus on deeper learning strategies rather students relying on last minute revision cramming.
  • In particular, the course will focus on the use of evidence based concepts such as spaced & deliberate practice, along with how Bloom’s Taxonomy & De Bono’s Thinking Hats might be used to develop deeper learning.
  • Although the course doesn’t cover theory in depth, key knowledge content will be used as a way to illustrate points made during the day.
  • The day will encourage delegates to think differently about how they approach the A level & to challenge & reflect on how they currently do things. There will be a range of activities that will help delegates find solutions that will work in their classroom immediately, along with resources that support longer term planning.

Who’s the course for?

  • Anyone delivering the A level in Fashion & Textiles, including those new to teaching A level, as well as more experienced teachers looking for reassurance & support.
  • Relevant to all exam boards.
  • Some content will also be relevant to other D&T A levels e.g. higher order thinking strategies.

What doesn’t this course include?

These points might help you identify if this is the best course to meet your needs:

  • Some reference will be made to the AS qualification but the main focus will be on the full A level.
  • The content doesn’t focus on one board, nor will it cover any particular theory areas in depth. Delegates looking for detailed & specific advice on elements of a particular exam board are advised to attend a course run by their chosen exam board.
  • As the course targets all exam boards it doesn’t include a traditional scheme of learning, although some guidance will be given.
  • Exam questions will be considered but the course will not include extensive use of these, nor delegates take part in extensive marking practice exercises. Instead the focus is on longer term teaching & learning strategies that better develop exam technique.
  • There will be limited reference to the NEA although links between the exam & NEA will be made.

What’s different about our course? Why should your school release you?

These courses also have the greatest depth of content with extensive supporting resources worth up to £100.

  • Our courses are known for their focus on real solutions for real classrooms with practical applications that really work and which don’t increase workload.
  • Content is delivered by Paul & Julie Boyd who between them have over 50 years experience in D&T education, including at senior leadership level, as well as 20 years experience in industry.
  • Delegates go away with a coaching action plan which helps them embed change over the next year.

This course is run by Paul & Julie Boyd (this is one of our independent courses and all bookings are done by contacting Julie Boyd direct - see information below)

  • This course provides an introduction to the new Product Design A Level starting from September 2017.
  • The course is not aimed at any one exam board but will cover key elements across all boards. Some of the course will be relevant to the legacy AQA A level qualification. Some reference will be made to the new AS qualification from 2017 but the 2 year A level will be the main focus.
  • The course is suitable for teachers new to teaching A level as well as more experienced teachers looking for reassurance on the A level from 2017.
  • There will be an overview of the specifications available and how to choose a course that will best suit your students
  • A big focus will be strategies to structure and manage the course, including curriculum planning and organisation, along with key priorities. The course considers the new qualification from the perspective of teaching and learning and delegates looking for detailed and specific advice on any individual elements of the specifications are advised to attend a course run by their chosen exam board.
  • The course will not cover any one particular theory area in depth but will look at key content as a way of illustrating points being made during the day.
  • There will be tips & ideas on making learning more interesting and active in order to engage students. The day will also include ideas on how to get students to work more independently and how to encourage students to ‘ think like an A  level student’.
  • Strategies for exam success will be considered along with methods of embedding these across the course. Note the course will not include extensive use of exam questions when looking at exam technique but will instead focus on longer term teaching and learning strategies that help build success in this area.
  • The course includes a very brief introduction to best practices in A level Non Exam Assessment. In particular this will include how to get students to work more independently under the stricter controlled assessment rules. Note there will not be detailed advice on grades and marking because this is a new qualification so accurate information is difficult to give at this stage.
  • The course includes a free teaching and learning resources pack to take away with you
  • Note this course is not the same as others on this page but there may be similar content in some sections so check with us if you have been on a previous A level course to make sure the course meets your needs.

What delegates say about this course

I found this course really inspiring. Paul and Julie really know their stuff and had obviously done a great deal of careful preparation for the course. It was well thought out, clearly structured and I came away with a much clearer picture of which exam board spec I am going to do. I was floundering a bit before the course but went away reinvigorated and enthused.

Loved this course. Very informative, I found all the sessions useful.

Awesome! So thorough and in depth. Julie & Paul are very, very well resources, there is nothing they haven’t got!

Very useful, this is the only CPD I’ve attended where actual visible strategies have been shown that we can take and adapt.

Very well organised, relevant and useful & something that will impact on my future practice.

Being shown examples of higher level thinking and different exam techniques for A level is very useful as was the variety of resources that I can take away and use in lessons.

This will really help with the planning for next term. Good comparison and other activities. Great info on smart materials.

This has made me embrace opportunity and change.

It’s been so good it been like being on a holiday!! Lots of time to think and talk without the pressure of school.
