Outcomes

You will be able to:

  • investigate a range of high tech textiles materials and consider how they can be used in the classroom
  • further develop your understanding of the links between science and industry and be able to use this to create outstanding design and technology lessons
  • develop a greater awareness of the diversity of careers in the textiles industry and in particular the growing number of careers that combine fashion/textiles and science
  • create projects and resources to use straight away back in your classroom that will raise the profile of design and technology, and of textiles in particular

Content

Take an in depth look at technical textiles on this course with content that supports the curriculum changes at GCSE and A level, as well as being relevant to KS3. The course is suitable for participants who have previously attended the Technical Textiles: Using Smart and Modern Materials in Design and Technology CPD activity and will have different content. It is also suitable for new participants who have no previous experience of technical textiles and is relevant to both specialists and non specialists. All participants will receive a range of resources that supports delivery of the content back in the classroom.

On day 1, after a general introduction to the course at the National STEM Learning Centre, we’ll be visiting the School of Design at the University of Leeds for the remainder of the day. Lecturers from the university will be delivery a range of activities and lectures that combine creativity, design, technology and business to show that textiles is an exciting and vibrant subject. The visit to Leeds will include:

  • Exploring how common textile fibres can be modified to look, feel and perform like a different material with a range of performance characteristics and uses.
  • Investigating properties such as strength, modulus, rigidity, friction and thermosetting for fibres used in clothing and technical textiles.
  • How developments in production processes for textile products are affected by materials and their properties.
  • How simple mathematics plays a vital role in the textiles industry
  • The realities and myths of sustainability in the textiles industry
  • The nature of the industry and opportunities for employment in the UK and overseas
  • A tour of the School of Design and opportunities to find out more about the courses the university offers and their work as a leading research and teaching institute for textiles, design and technology.

The second day back at the National STEM Learning Centre will build on the visit to the University of Leeds with activities and ideas that help delegates deliver learning on technical textiles back in the classroom, both as part of the core content for the D&T GCSE, as well as for those delivering textiles as a specialist areas at both GCSE and A level. The day will focus on a range of technical textiles and how they can be used to increase creativity and innovation in D&T. Content will also help departments raise the profile of D&T, and particularly textiles, showcasing the wide range of opportunities for study and careers in this area.

Outcomes

  • gain hands-on experience of smart materials, modern materials and technical textiles
  • develop confidence and ideas for delivering the smart and modern materials elements of design and technology GCSE
  • investigate how smart materials, modern materials and technical textiles can be used at key stage 3 to create a future facing design and technology curriculum

Content

Discover how to develop an exciting, modern design and technology curriculum, using smart and modern materials from engineering, product design and textiles. Session content will specifically focus on the smart and modern materials elements of the new design and technology GCSE, with support for those teachers wishing to develop this area at key stage 3.

1
  • explore key elements of the smart and modern materials content of the design and technology GCSE specifications, including technical textiles, new technologies in smart and modern materials, composites, nano-technology and biopolymers
  • discover how smart and modern materials are changing the way we design and make products
  • investigate the science behind modern and smart materials and see examples of how this can be taught in a creative way
  • visit the University of Leeds Design School to find out more about high-tech medical textiles
  • visit the Nonwovens Institute of Research and Innovation (NIRI) to see how non-wovens are changing the world around us
  • consider ways of embedding science into your design and technology curriculum, through a range of practical activities
  • resources to take away that help embed smart and modern materials into the curriculum

Where possible, sessions will be hands-on and each participant will receive a free materials handling kit.

Please note, this course will cover the general content for modern and smart material in the design and technology GCSE specifications. However, it may not cover all of the specific examples listed in all of the specifications.
