This course is run by Julie Boyd

  • This course focuses on the Fashion & Textiles 2017 qualifications but it is also relevant to the older specifications that finish in 2018. It does not target any one exam board and will look at exam techniques that apply to all specifications.
  • The course is most suitable for teachers who want to develop exam technique and higher order thinking skills.
  • The use of Blooms Taxonomy & De Bono’s Thinking Hats will be used to develop higher order thinking skills and exam technique. This course will focus on this area more than any of the other courses on this page. It aims to give teachers ideas on how they might help students develop more ‘A level thinking’ approach to their work.
  • Exam questions and answers will be used to illustrate the strategies used on the course. Note that the course does not focus on going through a large number of exam questions and answers. Instead the focus is on strategies teachers and students can use to help them think and write to a higher level. A limited number of exam questions and answers will be used to demonstrate these strategies.
  • Key content from the specification will be used to illustrate ideas and strategies but the course does not aim to focus on any area in detail.
  • Both AS and A2 exam technique will be covered.
  • Reference to a scheme of work will be made but this will be in the context of exam technique rather than giving a detailed outline of a course. A detailed scheme of learning will not be given out on the course because it targets several exam boards. Suggestions on curriculum planning and organisation will be given along with supporting resources.
  • Although this course focuses on textiles much of the content will also be relevant to other areas of D&T
  • Tips & ideas on making learning more interesting and active
  • The course will include a free teaching and learning resources pack to take away with you
  • Click here to find out what makes our courses different to those of other trainers, along with tips on persuading your school to release you

What delegates say about this course:

Fab day, exceeded my expectations. There wasn’t anything that wasn’t useful, either to introduce something new or to reinforce my current practice.

Really enjoyed the day. I feel confident now about student led learning and it has given me many tools to help teach the specification better.

Very useful and manageable tips that I can easily include in lessons

Fantastic information - lots of examples of classroom strategies

I feel much more confident about starting to teach A level textiles. Good range of resources given.

Great activities to engage students - the day has been an inspiration.

Excellent range of resources & excellent organisation. I will be using the information and resources in my teaching straight away.

Valuable ideas & strategies that can be easily applied to engage students.

  • This course focuses on the Fashion & Textiles 2017 qualifications. It does not target any one exam board and will consider key elements of all specifications.
  • The course is a general introduction to the qualifications available from 2017 in textiles. It will help delegates consider which course best suits their students as well as helping them plan and create an effective and successful course.
  • The course will not cover any one particular theory area in depth but will look at key areas as a way of illustrating points being made during the day..
  • The course will consider both AS level and A level, although note the main focus will be the 2 year A level course.
  • Tips on structuring a successful A level course, including adapting any resources and planning from the older AS and A level qualifications.
  • Reference to a scheme of work will be made but delegates should note that a detailed scheme of learning will not be given out because the course targets several exam boards. Suggestions and advice on curriculum planning and organisation will be given along with supporting resources.
  • Tips & ideas on making learning more interesting and active. Note that key content from the specification will be used to illustrate these ideas but the course does not aim to cover key content in any detail and focuses on teaching and learning strategies that engage students.
  • Encouraging ‘A  level thinking’ in students - the transition from GCSE
  • Developing good learning habits including the use of Blooms Taxonomy and thinking skills.
  • The course includes a very brief introduction to best practices in A level Non Exam Assessment. Note that this is not the main focus of the day & any content on this area will be a general overview only. There will be no exemplar folders other those from the exam board as these don’t currently exist as it is a new qualification. Advice on grades and marking will also be limited for the same reason.
  • The course will include a free teaching and learning resources pack to take away with you
