What are the course objectives?

Design process
  • To create a curriculum with a range of tried & tested strategies that work across all key stages to empower students to maximise their potential when approaching the design process, and in particular the non exam assessment (NEA).
  • To develop independent learners that are creative thinkers who can time manage their own design tasks.
  • To understand the elements of a design challenge & be able to work like a designer to solve problems.

What is the course about?

  • Strategies for embedding the skills needed to approach the design process in a creative & independent way. 
  • Preparing students for the non exam assessment that is part of the D&T GCSE and A level qualifications. 
  • Building a curriculum that embeds good learning habits with a joined up design thinking curriculum across years 7-13.
  • Understanding the starting points for design e.g. contextual challenges, design problems, user needs, & being able to develop design briefs & design solutions from these starting points, along with following an iterative design approach.
  • Strategies for developing independent learners who can manage their time effectively, and who can independently approach a design problem, whether it be as part of the GCSE and A level qualification or as part of a broader interest in design.
  • Using various taxonomies, speed designing & other tried & tested strategies to develop independent, creative thinking students. 
  • The day will encourage you to think differently & to challenge & reflect on how you currently do things. You will do a range of activities that will help you find solutions that will work in your classroom immediately, along with resources that support longer term planning. 
  • The resources & content are designed to compliment the Exam Success: How to Make Learning Stick in D&T course so delegates who have previously attended that course will find the NEA Success course particularly useful. 

This isn’t just a bog standard NEA course - it goes much further focusing on how to create a whole curriculum learning environment that supports designing, creativity & independent learning across all D&T material areas.  

Who’s the course for? 

  • Any D&T teacher from any material area, including non specialists.
  • Relevant to all boards & key stages.
  • Particularly relevant to teachers looking for support to develop the skills students will need to independently approach the GCSE & A level NEA.

What resources do I get on the course?

The day includes resources worth more than £50. Examples of some of the resources included with the day are:

  • An extensive electronic resource pack to support the day itself, much of which can be used immediately back in the classroom. The resource pack also supports curriculum planning over a longer period. Resources are supplied on a memory stick. 
  • A copy of The Pocket Universal Principles of Design bookNEA course by William Lidwell. This books supports some of the delivered content during the day. 
  • Physical resources to enable you to carry out one of the teaching & learning activities with a whole class (we can’t tell you what these are as it would spoil the activity but the images gives you a sneak peak!)
  • Materials for short iterative design practical activities. 
  • Note resources may be changed at any time without notification due to availability but any resource will be replaced with an alternative to the same value. 

What does this course not include?

These points might help you identify if this is the best course to meet your needs:

  • Whilst the content ultimately aims to prepare students for success in the NEA the focus is not solely on the GCSE or A level NEA itself. 
  • This isn’t a ‘how to do the NEA’ course & we will not be looking at sample folders or moderating work & delegates looking for this type of day would be better on an exam board course. 
  • Instead the course approaches the design process from a wider context with a focus on curriculum planning that supports the development of NEA skills, along with strategies that help students embed skills over a longer period of time enabling them to work like ‘real’ designer in a more focused, independent & less formulaic way.
  • In line with exam board regulations live NEA contexts will not be discussed.
