Encouraging creativity & thinking outside the box (or shoe in this case!)

More updates this week focusing on revision and preparation for the exam to hopefully save you some valuable time.

All GCSE exam papers no matter what the board cover some element of designing and in particular creativity is something that gains pupils marks. This link shows a range of unusual ideas for shoes and this might help to get students thinking outside the box. A downside of the link is that the shoes are all targeted at females but there are some weird and funny ones which might generate discussion and inspiration for both boys and girls http://iwastesomuchtime.com/on/?i=31103 (check out the site beforehand as there is some odd stuff on there and you may just want to use the images for printing etc. rather than letting students have full access to it).

Another link that might help you get students to focus on creativity is http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coca-cola-tribute-to-fashion#!/photos/147616/8 This is Coca Cola’s Tribute to a fashion charity project and shows couture ‘clothing’ for Coke bottles including designs from Moschino, Donatella Versace, Missoni, Alberto Ferreti, Consuelo Castiglioni, Anna Molinari and Etro.

And finally for this week Louise Davies at the D&T Association is looking for primary, special or secondary schools who work with a local employer or the community on a D&T project. The Association would like to do some case studies of any schools doing this type of work. If you have been doing this sort of work in your school and you are interested please get in touch with her, mentioning my name and outlining the design brief and the work you have been doing. Please also contact her if you are interested in setting up an employer or community led design and make project for years 5/6 or 7/8 in the future. Her email is louise@data.org.uk
