Colour, leaving pressies, prizes & 20 things we should say more often

L P7080046

The end of term is now within touching distance, in fact I know that for some lucky schools it is this week. No matter what date you break up I hope everyone has a well earned break.

The blog will continue until 24th July and then it will take a break over the summer. Don’t forget you can still get regular D&T updates and freebies over the summer by following my Facebook page. Just ‘like’ the page to see D&T updates most days.

If you are changing schools and still want to receive the blog via email don’t forget to let me have your new email address.

Over the summer I will be updating resources and my websites as well as planning new courses. I spent a day last week looking at excellent new course venues in Watford and Putney so keep a look out for courses in those venues (there are a couple of new ones listed on the website for Watford already). Both have excellent transport links and are perfect for the small personalised courses my husband and I like to run.  If either of these venues are convenient for you, and you would like to see a particular course put on, just drop me an email  (there are no additional costs for requesting a course).

Stab vest panel

#ThinkDo #Revision What’s the name of the yellow fabric that makes this panel from a police vest stab proof? What other properties does this  fabric have? What is the silver layer you can see on top of the fabric? How is it made? What is its purpose?

Colour

L IMG 8806 copy

This website http://design-seeds.com/search posts regular photos of the natural world along with matching colour palettes. This could be an interesting potential holiday homework project with students either taking photos that have interesting colour palettes, collecting magazine cuttings of interesting colour palettes, or even creating colour palettes similar to the ones on the website. There are also lots of colour palette boards on Pinterest so students could use these as inspiration and could even set up their own boards. You can see my Pinterest colour palette board at https://goo.gl/Chuuna

Leaving Pressies!

Continuing with the colour theme these Pantone mugs from John Lewis make great leaving presents for members of staff who are leaving at the end of term or as a thank you present for your department.

20 Things We Should Say More Often

L thank you cards 5720

saw this video this week http://bit.ly/1NT7gpc  via @SLT_Kat  and thought it would be great for tutor time, whether it be to round off the academic year or as a start to the new one in September. The video lists 20 things we should say more often, some are silly, some serious, some are obvious and some are a bit different. It’s a little corny (and very American!) but it could be a good way to get students to reflect back over the year (or to start a new term). As well as reflecting on the ones the video lists students could add their own ideas as well as identifying their own personal top five that they want to do more of.

End of Year Prizes

1

Wilkinson have some cheap files, magnets, stamps and tins with a 50s sewing theme that would make great prizes for end of year awards and competitions. They aren’t boy friendly but if you have lots of girls they would be ideal. The magnets and stamps in particular come as a pack and could be split to make a range of small prizes or keep sakes.

FREE Courses at The National Science Learning Centre in York

Last December I ran a successful 2 day course at the National Science Learning Centre in York on smart and modern materials and this course will run again this November and again in July 2016.

L IMG 4298

The course is a bit different to other courses in several ways. Firstly it’s a very intense 2 days jam packed full of activities and trips, including a late finish on the Friday, and an overnight stay to make sure you are ready for an early start on the Saturday morning.

Secondly the course and accommodation are all FREE! This is because delegates can apply for an Enthuse bursary which means the £550 course fee is refunded once you have completed the course.  To get the funding delegates have to fill in a formal application form saying why they want to attend, they have to attend all of both days, as well as writing an action plan at the end of day 2 on how they will use their learning.

This was a fabulous 2 day event last year and if you are interested in finding out more about this year’s course visit https://goo.gl/H0hmjr or email me

low E-textiles circuit

E-textiles will be part of the focus on the smart and modern 2 day course mentioned above but this year there is also an additional 2 day course focusing just on e-textiles. This will take place in December, and like the other course, is an intensive 2 day course on a Friday and Saturday with costs covered by the Enthuse bursary that delegates can apply for.

Find out more about this course at https://goo.gl/FkVPF8

Note that although I am delivering both of these courses they are run by the Science Learning Centre so all bookings, admin and queries about the Enthuse awards are done by them. For details on the Enthuse awards contact Gemma Taylor g.taylor@slcs.ac.uk
