Cycles, degree shows, & A Level textiles revision

Wishing Everyone a Fabulous Half Term!

It’s half term at last! Here’s hoping for some nice sunny weather over the next week to help everyone recharge their batteries after a challenging term of controlled assessment, and revision. If you are looking for some D&T related trips over half term don’t forget there are suggestions listed on my website page here

Prom Photography

Now that the exam season has officially started the planning is beginning in many schools for the end of exams prom. As well as working as an education consultant my husband, Paul, is also a professional photographer and one of his specialist areas is prom and events photos. He offers a profit share scheme where the school actually makes money for every photo that taken at an event. There are no initial costs to the school and photos can be printed and taken away on the night.

Are You in a Leicestershire School?

If you work in a Leicestershire school you might be interested in a FREE after school workshop my husband, Paul Boyd, is running on 11th June from 4 - 6.30pm at Beaumont Leys School.

ipad 2348 Snapseed

This session is organised by the Leicestershire Education Business Company (LEBC) and the focus in on using iPads in the D&T classroom. This will be an introductory session which will include how to connect your iPad, using the iPad for CAD, video & editing and using the iPad as a teaching & Learning tool. Even if you only have limited access to iPads at school this session will give you some ideas on how you can use the iPad as a creation device rather than just using it as a media tool. Many of the apps that will be shown can be used for all subject areas within D&T. There will be a number of iPads available to use in the training but you can also bring your own.

For more details about the session telephone Judith Payne at 0116 240 7000 or email

If you are a Leicestershire school you might also be interested in the JambleD&T Leicestershire group set up by James Bleach. This is a local forum to support networking and sharing across the county. There are also similar groups across for other counties. To find your local group search for JambleD&T and then add you county. For more information visit the information page on the JambleD&T website.

If you are a Leicestershire school changing from being a KS3 or KS4 school to being an 11-16 school take a look at the new course I am running in July on becoming an all through school.

Visiting Degree Shows

IMG 1143

Not only are our GCSE and A level students coming to the end of their courses but so are Further and Higher Education students. That means that there are a huge number of degree and other shows coming up.

Encourage students to visit any local end of course shows for inspiration and ideas for coursework and controlled assessment, as well as to help them consider courses and careers for the future. These shows can be very motivating, helping to give students direction and something to aspire to.

If you can’t arrange a school trip why not set a visit to a show as a homework, or get students who are unable to travel to follow Twitter and Facebook feeds from local universities.

Don’t forget many colleges and universities will also come into school to do talks to students for free and most also have funding to run events and taster days.

Check out the websites for your local university and colleges to find out dates of shows and events.

New Designers in London is also an excellent event to attend. 3000 of Britain’s most promising graduates showcase their work across a number of days in June and July. The event is open to the public and there are also dedicated school days. Find out more at

Focus on Textiles: Back to  my roots!

A Level Revision

The GCSE textiles exam is out of the way so there’s just the A level one to worry about now!

Carbon Fibre

Below are a few links to drip feed to your students over half term to keep them thinking about their exam. Don’t forget there are lots of short #ThinkDo activities on my website as well as on my Facebook page. If you have school Facebook or Twitter accounts, or platforms such as Edmodo, the #ThinkDo activities might be useful to share to keep students thinking about textiles, especially those who might not do too much revision. You could also use my Pinterest folders for those who like to keep revision visual. The links might also be useful to support lessons for all year groups after half term. - environmentally friendly fibres - useful summary about weaving. This website also has a wide range of other posts that are useful for A level revision. - online textiles dictionary - short video on how Nike recycles plastic bottles to make football jerseys

Monsoon - issues linked to the environment and links for further reading. (via KT O’rton via Textiles Surgery Facebook group) - short video on sustainability and fashion (via Michelle Hampson on Textiles Surgery Facebook group) - documentary movie about fast fashion and its impact. This is available from May 29th so there is just time to fit it in before the exam! You can go to a live screening or buy the film on iTunes.

If you are looking for support with developing your A level course take a look at the courses coming up on 9th June, 2nd July & 12th October
