Designing resources, coping with exam stress & a free textiles revision resource giveaway

I hope everyone had a good Easter break even though this holiday is generally taken up with a lot of moderating and marking of coursework and revision planning.

Over the break I have been getting ready for courses coming up this term (don’t forget it’s your last chance to book for the Introduction to E-textiles course coming up on 24th April). I have also had a request to add a couple of new courses to the current calendar. The details about 'Leading an Outstanding D&T Department’ on 23rd June can be seen by clicking here. The second new course, ‘An Introduction to 3D Software & 3D Printing for Beginners’ (13th June) isn’t on the website yet but details will be available soon. You can get further details on the second course by emailing paulboyd@mac.com. Both courses are suitable for all D&T teachers.

Don’t forget anyone can request a course of their choice to be added to the calendar. The course is opened up to everyone and there’s no additional charge just because you requested it. Why not build a course into your Performance Review conversation or as part of your gained time?  Email julie@julieboyd.co.uk for details.

Focus on Designing

Coursework and controlled assessment may pretty much be over for year 11s but there is still lots of designing thinking going on with the up and coming exams. Many schools have also started year 10 on their controlled assessment journey so the links below on designing will be relevant to them too. Anyone reviewing their approach to designing as part of the new KS3 curriculum (and KS4 & 5 when they are released) might also find these links useful.

The PDF could be used to print out the cards or alternatively you can download the cards as an app on your phone http://goo.gl/Vo35dG. Coping with Exam Stress

As we start an all important term for revision now is the time students (and teachers!) start to feel the stress levels rising. Support students with the stress of exams using ideas from these links. They are useful for both lesson and tutor group time.

Focus on Textiles: Back to  my roots!

FREE Revision Resource Giveaway!

I am giving away a FREE resource that might be useful when revising smart and modern materials with students.

All you have to do to receive the resource is like my Facebook page (it’s my business page not my personal one). Click here to visit the page and you will be sent a direct message on how to download the resource. If you are already a member of my Facebook page you can still receive the resource by sending me a direct message from my Facebook page and I will send you the download as well (click on ‘message’ and note replies will go into your ’Others’ folder).

Bullet proof vest

The resource is in PDF format and can be printed out as A6 cards which can be laminated. It is ideal for use as starters, and plenaries or as an introduction to a longer classroom activity.

It consists of 8 images (Goretex, photochromic thread, bullet proof vest, reflective tape, Speedo Fastskin, phosphorescence, high vis jacket, and a cushion radio) which are considered from 4 different perspectives and which can be printed onto the back of the photo. These are: Let’s Learn (information on the photo), Quick Questions (#ThinkDo questions on the image), Exam Questions (past exam questions linked to the image), and Product Analysis (#ThinkDo product analysis activities linked to the image). The resource also comes with a short introduction about using the cards.

This resource is currently not available anywhere else to download and is limited to anyone liking my Facebook page. The offer is available until the end of April 2015.

Biba

Something that has been included on my Facebook page this week has been some information on Biba, the fashion brand that was at its height in the 60s and 70s. This information might be particularly useful if you have students looking at the history of fashion from those eras.

http://goo.gl/spP5SB - History of Biba on the V&A website
http://goo.gl/1Wc9Ba - History of Biba on Design Museum website
http://goo.gl/W9u9N
 - The Biba website today relaunched by House of Fraser

If you look at my Facebook entry for 15th April you will also see a range of photos showing the Biba range in House of Fraser.

Competitions to Enter

If you are looking for something to motivate students during revision time how about getting them to enter a competition? My competition to win an embellisher machine for the school the student attends (plus a prize for the student) is a good opportunity for a bit of practical revision http://goo.gl/kU99i9. This competition is also great if you are looking for a project idea for KS3 in the summer term or perhaps something for an after school club.

For something that involves a bit less work, what about the Young Fashion Designer UK competition? Students can submit copies of pages from their controlled assessment, along with a photo of their final product. For more information visit http://goo.gl/nNDmYp
