FREE courses, real life D&T, things we take for granted & 3D printed fashion

With tight school budgets anything free is always a bonus! Amazingly the STEM Centre in York run a number of completely FREE courses including two I will be leading towards the end of this term. They are both 2 day courses, and not only are the 2 days completely FREE, but your accommodation and meals are paid for, and you get heaps of resources to take away. There is no catch and all you have to do to get the courses for free is to apply for an Enthuse bursary (which is a form you have to fill in saying why you want to come on the course).

The first course I am running is on smart and modern materials in textiles and this takes place on 13th & 14th November. Click here for more details.

The second course is on e-textiles and basic programming. Although it has a textiles bias it is also suitable for non specialists interested in delivering the electronics and programming elements at KS3. The course is on 11th & 12th December and you can find more details by clicking here. Don’t forget to look for the Enthuse bursary information to find out how to get the course and accommodation for free.

Real Life D&T

A big thank you to Vanessa McSween for letting me know about the Toyota 50th Anniversary magazine that has come out this week with some great examples of D&T being used in real life.  Called ’This Way’ you can download the Autumn 2015 magazine free from iTunes.  Articles include:

  • The Bigshot digital camera that comes as a self assembly kit for young children to put together so they understand the underlying science behind how a camera works
  • Toyota’s ‘safety sense’, a new set of safety technologies that Toyota say take safety to another standard. It uses a small camera and laser sensor on the inside of the windscreen  e.g. a pre-collision system, lane departure alert and automatic dipping of full beam headlights when there is oncoming traffic.
  • Toyota concept cars from 1965 - 2015
  • Kirobo the robot who went to the International Space Station
  • An interactive page imagining a world where all cars are eco aware
  • A car that has thousands of colour combinations inside and out so you can create your own customised car
  • Visit  https://goo.gl/q1s9Fm for more information on the magazine

Things We Take For Granted

The Toyota ‘This way’ magazine that I mentioned in the section above also has a great set of short videos on things we take for granted; things that are there when we need them but which we only realise the value of when they are gone. The videos would make an interesting starting points for discussion with a tutor group and there are also a couple of videos that are D&T related.

With just over 2 weeks to go until The Textiles Teacher Event on October 3rd there are just 4 tickets left so book soon to avoid disappointment! Preparing the day is keeping me busy, including packaging up forty sets of free technical textiles posters that everyone who attends will take away. With eleven A2 sized posters in each set that’s a lot of posters to organise! For more about the event and to book the last few tickets visit http://goo.gl/IHWgj7

3D Printed Fashion

L IMG 9278

One of the things that will be on show at The Textiles Teacher Event is a 3D printer along with ideas on how this might be used in textiles.

3D printing is attracting growing interest within the textiles industry and this article is about a designer who has used 3D printing to create an entire fashion collection even though she was unfamiliar with 3D printing before her collection began.
