New D&T GCSE subject content released, competition prize presented & The Textiles Teacher Event is coming to London!

L Julie Boyd 9280

The blog is a slightly different format this week as things are very busy with courses, so there’s been no time for me to research the variety of links I normally do. I'm hoping to get things back on track for next week’s blog.

Don’t forget when the blog goes quiet because I am busy I am generally still adding lots of links and free resources to my Facebook and Twitter pages so keep an eye on those. A few of the resources from Facebook over the last few weeks are included below. I'm also planning to release a new free resource soon which will be posted on Facebook, so that’s another reason to keep an eye on it.

New Subject Content for D&T Released

Gov uk

It has been a week with lots of documents and information relating to the subject content for the new GCSE being released. It can get a bit confusing with all the different documents so here are the links all summarised below. Don’t forget that although the subject content is now official we won’t know the exact detail until we get the exam board specifications and much will depend on their interpretation of things.

We have run a number of courses this week that have included information on the new GCSE curriculum along with how departments might approach the changes. If you would like similar courses adding to the course calendar for the Spring term email julie@julieboyd.co.uk. If you are looking for a course that includes how textiles fits into the new curriculum there is one on 9th December.

Textiles Competition Prizes Presented & a New Competition is on its Way!

As well as being busy with courses I have been delivering the prize for my competition to the winning school and updating all the details on my website. It was a real pleasure to meet Gail Rawlins, textiles teacher at Cornwallis Academy, along with her student Phoebe Aldrich, and to hand over the prizes. To see more about the presentation of the prize, including a short video of Phoebe and her teacher talking about the competition click here.

I have also had it confirmed that Husqvarna Viking and Coles Sewing Centre in Nottingham will be sponsoring a prize for the next competition. This will be a HClass 100 sewing machine that normally retails at around £300. This prize will be for the winning school with the winning student also receiving a separate prize. Details will follow as soon as all the details are organised.

The Textiles Teacher Event is Going on the Road!

I have had lots of people ask if I could run The Textiles Teacher Event in London so we are now taking it on the road! In fact the name has changed to reflect this and it is now known as The Textiles Teacher Roadshow!

Tammy Mitchell, who came to the Nottingham event, generously offered to host the day in her fabulous D&T rooms at Lady Margaret School in Parsons Green in London on Saturday 27th February. The cost is £42 which is a huge discount compared to the usual course costs. Despite the price, the day will still be a full day course with the usual high quality content we offer in our full price day courses. There will also be a free resource giveaway for anyone who attends. To find out more about the event, the free resource giveaway, where the venue is, and to book the day click here

I am also considering running the event in the Manchester / Liverpool area so if your school are interested in hosting it let me know. We would need a venue with good transport links, a classroom with at least 20 sewing machines as well as a separate room for another 25 teachers (but this can be a non specialist room).
