Last week I mentioned a new course that has just been added to the course calendar called Leading an Outstanding D&T Department . This week another new one has been released called An Introduction to 3D Software and 3D Printing for Beginners. The full course calendar can be viewed at http://goo.gl/hcaSxKDon’t forget that all courses can also be delivered in school so remember this if you are thinking ahead to any curriculum developments and planning you are doing over the summer term. Please try and contact us as early as possible if you are looking for in school support in June and July in particular as these tend to be our busiest times.

VE Day Commemorations

Friday 8 May 2015 is the anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), marking 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe. The occasion will be commemorated with events across the UK and the following links may provide inspiration if you are aiming to mark the day, either in your D&T classroom, or as part of tutor time:

Support for Tutor Time Activities

Last week my blog included lots of resources related to exam stress that are suitable for use, both with tutor groups, and within D&T lessons. Some of the resources were from The Samaritans website and, as well as the resources listed last week, the website has a number of useful resources, including lesson plans, linked to other stressful situations for young people. These include coping with change, building resilience, positive thinking, and being assertive.

Visit http://www.samaritans.org/node/1853 to find out more

If you are looking at these types of issues in tutor time they might also find the PSHE Association website useful and this has the most up to date Programme of Study along with guidance on its implementation as well as a range of teacher resources and guides https://www.pshe-association.org.uk

Life Cycle Analysis

A popular focus for the QWC question for many of the exam boards are issues linked to sustainability. Here are some useful links related to one area of sustainability, life cycle analysis:

http://bit.ly/WnWVMk - Life cycle analysis of a pair of jeans (click on the grey ‘life cycle research’ box at the bottom of the page as it takes you to a useful PDF)

http://goo.gl/ernq1k - a presentation on life cycle analysis (I am not sure what the source for this was but the names of the authors are on the first slide)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXPuuwAhtQo - video on Nike’s ‘Making’ app enabling students to reflect on and compare different fibres and their use of water/chemicals etc.

The book ‘A practical guide to sustainable fashion’ by Alison Gwilt has some excellent information on anything environmental and it is very student friendly. Chaper 2 focuses on the life cycle of a garment and it has some excellent explanations and really useful diagrams and flow charts. It also has exercises at the end of the book students can do and these are good for use as a one off or as part of the coursework.

Free Smart & Modern Resource

As well as this weekly blog I use my Facebook page to add additional updates throughout the week. I include things I have seen when I am out, revision and classroom activities and anything else D&T related (although there is a bit of bias towards textiles I must admit!). If you find the content of the blog useful, and you are on Facebook, you might therefore find my Facebook page useful as well. Don’t worry I can’t see your feed and it’s all D&T related.

I will also be starting to use my Facebook page more to share information, especially short snippets that aren’t suitable for my blog. This started off last week with a free smart and modern resource offer for anyone who new who ‘liked’ the page, or who was already a member of the group (just send me a direct message from the Facebook page). There is still time to get the free resource until the end of April.

If anyone is still waiting for the resource, check your ‘others’ message folder as I have sent out quite a few direct messages via Facebook that I have had no reply to. If there is no message in your ‘others’ folder drop me a quick email at julie@julieboyd.co.uk. Some people have had problems finding the resource when they have downloaded it as they haven’t been sure where it is on their computer. Just do a quick search for the file name ‘ThinkDo Smart & Modern Resource’.

You can see more information on the resource in last week’s blog
