Ear Bud Wrap & Packaging Project

This project by Leah Ditchburn, who teaches Graphics and Product Design at Casterton College, caught my eye because of it mixed materials approach and its focus on presenting a real product that could be retailed. The quality of the end products are high and this would be an excellent enterprise or charity project with products actually being sold.

Leah runs the project at KS3 over a 12 week module. Students initially model the product from card and then develop it using 2D design. It is then cut from 3mm acrylic.

The packaging is developed using MS Publisher/Photoshop, depending on the ability of the students, and is printed on thin card which is cut out either using a die cutter or by hand. The blister pack is made using an MDF mould using 3mm MDF and vac formed using 0.3 PVC. The packaging is assembled using glue when it is complete.

This is a simple and effective idea focusing on a product that is very relevant to most students. The project gives the students opportunities to design and be creative creating their own design as well as the chance to consider the retail element of the product.
