The Textiles Teacher Roadshow

Gillingham School was the venue for the Textiles Teacher Roadshow in May 2017 with Claire Custard acting as our host. Some of the fabulous work produced by students that Claire and her colleague, Marion Beck, teach was showcased at the event.

On show were some unusual innovative designs including a fold up children’s changing mat, a mad hatter inspired hat with a hidden compartment, and a giant daisy floor cushion made up of huge petals that Velcroed together.

All work showcased was fantastic but a bag designed and made by one of the boys as part of his GCSE particularly stood out. The quality of the bag was extremely high and it could easily have been mistaken for one in the shops. It also included lots of clever features and challenging techniques, including the use of a reflective vinyl print and separate compartments inside the bag for different items to be stored.

There was a wide variety of different types of work across all year groups reflecting both traditional textiles outcomes as well as more unusual ones.
