Sketchbook work trialling different techniques

These great examples of sketchbooks are by year 10 students at The Priory Academy LSST, Lincoln. The pages show how students have trialled a variety of different decorative and construction techniques, along with fabric theory work, before starting their coursework task. Their teacher, Miss C Atkinson has found this approach really helps students think about what they enjoy and what they can or can't do and that this feeds well in to their coursework project.

The sketchbook pages were created as part of a D&T textiles GCSE course and showcase how creative D&T textiles can be. This approach would be just as relevant for students as part of the new D&T GCSE from 2017, as well as the art textiles GCSE and the Technical Awards.

I particularly love the tactile approach of the sketchbooks with the inclusion of samples, as well as the use of images related to the techniques. I also like the analytical comments that evaluate the use of techniques plus the instructions on how to do the techniques.

No matter what type of textiles qualification is being studied sketchbooks such as these help students develop both their skills as well as developing independent learning skills.
