To help students maintain a balanced view of a situation it can be useful to use the ‘circle of influence’ technique that is often used in business coaching. Although this is a technique often used in adult workplaces it is just as useful for adapting with different age groups across a range of situations, helping individuals feel more in control of both a situation and the emotions that go with it. This technique might be useful for using with students as a coping tool across a range of situations at home and at school.

In a nutshell the technique helps us identify the things we can control and those we can’t. It encourages us to focus on taking action on the things we can control and focusing less on those we can’t. This way we are empowered to have a degree of control but within a realistic framework.
