Maths anxiety

Maths has always been a part of Design and Technology but the D&T GCSE from 2017 emphasises this link and raises the profile of maths through the compulsory content of maths questions in the exam (15% of questions). Many teachers feel anxious of the raised profile of maths as, even though they acknowledge they use maths all the time in their classroom, suddenly having it as a tested area makes it seem much more daunting.

Maths anxiety is an acknowledged issue that can hold back both students and teachers who feel fear, apprehension and helplessness when tackling a maths problem (with potentially up to 60% of adults having negative feelings related to maths), all of which impacts on problem solving abilities which perpetuates the problem.
